Life in The Restaurant: Spondu!

At Joe Momma’s we have a game. The game is called Spondu and the rules are very simple. Any employee may at any time elect to say the word, “Spondu” and then proceed to smack whatever items another employee might be holding right out of their hands without consequence or retribution. The individual who did the smacking is not even obligated to assist in the cleaning up of the newly created mess. Should the “smacker” fail to dislodge the item(s) from the hands of the “smackee”, he is then subject to the demoralizing “head bob.” The failed “smacker” must loosen his or her neck and allow the victoriously unaffected “smackee” to place his or her hand on the back of the head and bob it forward while any other staff members look on.

I’m not quite sure how the game evolved. I’m pretty sure that the Spondu part came from a similar game of which I learned in high school while on a mission trip to the bad part of Arlington, TX. I Googled it to see if perhaps others had heard of the same game. I did find this definition in the urban dictionary.

The point is simple. Joe Momma’s is a more fun place to be because of the chance that you might get a stack of dirty dishes smacked out of your hands. Just a few days ago I got a full glass of Diet Dr Pepper Spondued out of my hands spraying me with the delicious low calorie beverage. It felt great.

I encourage you to infuse a little spondu in to your workplace. Smack some TPS reports right out of your coworkers hands and watch how they enjoy it. More from Life in the Restaurant next time.
