Bomar – America’s newest verb.

Sometimes people are identified so strongly with the things they do that their names evolve in to new parts of speech. A fine example of this phenomenon is “McGuyver“. This word, which is now both a noun and a verb refers to Richard Dean Anderson’s innovative character on the popular, long running television program of the same name. To McGuyver something now means to “rig” it to make it work with inferior or innapropriate tools and parts. In order to make the evolutionary leap from noun to verb it is also important that the noun start by having a nice ring to it. “McGuyver” just works.

Last week, Rhett Bomar, the former quarterback of the Oklahoma Sooners entered this rare company. He commited such a notoriously bone-headed move, that his name, Bomar, has begun to evolve in to a verb.

Bomar Main Entry:
Pronunciation: bo-mar
Function: noun, verb
Etymology: Big 12 Conference cir. 2006
1 v. a : to convert an especially good situation in to a notoriously bad one by your own foolish actions. b (1) : to completely forsake your hopeful future for the mediocre spoils of the present. 2 n. Bomar, Rhett: former quarterback for the University of Oklahoma Sooners.

I’m making it my personal quest to introduce Bomar as a noun. I will employ it as a part of my every day vernacular and will enjoy explaining the definition to those too dumb to figure it out.

Tonight…er actually tomorrow morning at 12:01 am I will be enjoying Will Ferrell’s return to greatness: Talledega Nights. This is the movie that’s going to make us forget Bewitched and Kicking and Screaming. That’s right. They’ll be washed from our memory. I have every hope that the Talladega Nights will supply us with another couple years of insane quotes the way Anchorman has…because as much as I enjoy the Anchorman quotes….they’ve grown stale. People are tired of my signing off every phone call, IM conversation, and business meeting with, “stay classy.” While I think saying, “60% of the time, it works every time” is hilarious, most people just look at me funny….because that doesn’t make sense.

Here’s something to wet your appetite: Cracked has posted the 10 best Will Ferrell skits
