We have an employee here at the restaurant named Blair. Blair is a talented football player for the Union Redskins, one of the top high school programs in the country. I was recently informed that in addition to playing H-back for the skins this year, Blair will take on punting duties for the team. As Blair and I were talking about his new role as the punter, I brought up Reggie Roby – the only notable black punter in the history of football. My childhood is full of memories of the great Roby booming punts to my Raiders on the classic Super Tecmo Bowl.
So we Googled Roby. Along with looking like the lead singer from Hootie and the Blowfish, we discovered that Roby lent his services to nearly every NFL team during his illustrious career. It has also been rumored that Roby fathered thousands of illigitimate future black punters. There are also rumors that he is the most prolific bar brawler in NFL punting history.
Here are some pics of the great Roby.
Here’s Roby talking smack to the ball. “Sucka! You’ve been bad! Now I’m going to punt you like the $%^& you are.”

“You lookin at me? I’m a bad mother#$%er.”

Roby in college. “Nobody has done the University of Iowa more proud….or engaged in relations with more lady Hawkeyes.”

The original specs for this monument to Roby included a crowd of ladies with “impressed” expressions of their faces gawking from the distance….the rising costs of bronze limited the statue to this simple monument to athletic brilliance.

“There’s nobody in the world like me. I think every decade has an iconic blonde–like Marilyn Monroe or Princess Diana–and right now, I’m that icon.”
-Paris Hilton
Ya know what’s funny? I read this quote today and immediately started making fun of Paris Hilton in my head again. Honestly. Has she said anything resembling anything intelligent….ever? This quote made me think though. If she’s that disillusioned, must I allow for the possibility that I too have misassesed myself and the way others percieve me? I have to at least consider it. I think it would be foolish to miss the opportunity to evaluate my perception of myself as it compares to the perception others have of me. While I may find myself amusing, engaging, attractive, etc., it’s important to consider that others may think of me as an attention hungry skank. Moving forward I will no longer take for granted that others find me to be as impressive as I’m sure I find myself. If Paris can be wrong, so can I. I’ve had an appointment with humility today, and I left our meeting a changed man. Thank you Paris.

Michael Bates (who tends to be right about most things) has found Momma’s Blog and written about it on his popular Tulsa news blog – Bates Line. I guess we’ve officially arrived. Be sure to pop over and check out the latest info to move across the Bates Line. I’d say it’s a much more trustworthy source of information than many of the local media outlets….especially the print ones. Bates also has a weekly column in the Urban Tulsa Weekly. Seriously – a good read and good honest talk about the Tulsa.

Sometimes smashing your face in to the ground is all you need to make you rethink your life.
Because I would never watch “So You Think You Can Dance” I only recently found this clip surfing the web. Enjoy.
I’m not even talking about the fish. The guy who caught the thing is amazing. He’s got a voice that would make men swoon and a mouth full of teeth that fish everywhere would die for. Click the pick for the CNN clip.

NCAA 07 by EA Sports marks the unofficial beginning of football season.

Which means my personal productivity drops at least two points for about a week. . . while I take TU to the title.
I reserved my copy at a local Electronic Boutique. I hung out in South Tulsa (which I don’t like) for two hours until midnight so I could go get my copy at 12:01. I showed up at the little store and a legion of idiots was lined up in front of me. Not wanting to hear all of the idiot frat boys talk about how they couldn’t wait to go grab some beer and beat their friends down with Ohio State, I left for 15 minutes, went to the little bar where my brother works and discussed with him how excited we were to play the new game.
When I figured I had given the frat boys enough time to get their games and leave I went back to the store. Upon my arrival I was disturbed to find that the little video game man inside had locked the door. From my cell phone I called inside. I watched him pick up the phone. I said, “Hey I’m standing right outside your door here. I was here just a few minutes ago, but left and came back. Can you just hand me my game out the door?” He replied with a simple “no.” I said, “Well I already bought the game and I have the receipt right here, so maybe you could just look at my receipt and hand me the game through the door?” “Nope, I already closed my register.” “But I already paid for it….which is proven here on my receipt.” “Yeah I know, but I have to ring it in for inventory purposes.” “Can you just do that tomorrow when you reopen your register?” “I’m sorry, but no.”
Lame. I then went to Wal-Mart and bought it. It usually takes Wal-Mart at least two or three days to get brand new games on the shelves. I check every time and they never have stuff right when it comes out, but somebody slept at a Holiday Inn before coming to work at the 81st and Lewis Wal-Mart and got the shelves stocked in a hurry. Well done shelf stocker!
So now I own two. One is still “in the inventory” at a small Electronic Boutique in South Tulsa. One is in my Playstation 2. I will be getting my money back tomorrow.
I May be light on posts for a while….and about the time I get bored with NCAA, Madden will come out. You realize football is here? It is. This is like labor day for women. You finally get to wear black….well we finally get to talk about football. Fantasy drafts will start taking place, training camps start, speculation abounds. ESPN cranks up the football coverage….and we don’t even have to care about anything else until MLB playoffs.
Go get your copy.

Well once again, Joe Momma’s Pizza did not win the Urban Tulsa’s Absolute Best of Tulsa award for best gourmet pizza. The winner was The Hideaway. I hope they enjoy their little trophy because it’s the last one they’ll ever get. Next year, Joe Momma’s all the way….
I did spend the evening at the ABoT party downtown at The Hive (formerly Curly’s, Venue 216, etc). It was great to see so many of the other nominees and to enjoy the sonorous sounds of my good friend Steve Liddell. I was able to sample foods from Caz’s Chowhouse, Tsunami Sushi, Qdoba, Ted’s Escondido, Savastano’s Pizza (which I think is great), Hideaway Pizza (which I think is ok) and more. At the very least, it was a nice free dinner.
As I enjoy the local flavor of Tulsa, I can’t help but be excited about the future of our city. I believe our growing restaurant and bar scene (especially in the mid-town and downtown areas) along with our growing local music scene will help to make Tulsa a city that’s known for the qualities that our unique home-grown business and bands create. I can’t wait to see what will develop Downtown, on Brookside, and perhaps even on Ol’ Rt. 66 (my personal quest). Stay tuned as we hope to have great news about our second location in the very near future. You can probably guess where it might be. For now I encourage you to get out and experience the Absolute Best of Tulsa. Next time you dine out – avoid the chains. Next time you go to a movie, check out what’s on at the Circle Cinema or even at the Admiral Twin. There’s more to this city than so many people experience. Sometimes you just have to dig a bit.
